Buggy, Quad or Zipline on Sal – Why the Same Two Hours Costs €44 or €145

Sal is flat, dry and criss-crossed with unsealed tracks, which makes it close to ideal for driving something with knobbly tyres. There are 18 off-road tours on the island, from €29.99, and at first glance they are interchangeable: a quad or a buggy, two hours, dust, the same handful of stops.

They are not interchangeable, and the price range gives it away. Two hours on a quad costs €44 with one operator and €90 with another. Two hours in a buggy costs €53 with one and €145 with another. Nobody is being cheated; the tours are different products with the same photograph.

What the price is actually made of

Four things move the number, and only one of them is visible from the listing photo.

Engine and vehicle. A 1000cc buggy is not a 300cc quad. The two-hour buggy desert adventure at €145 runs 1000cc machines through the south of the island and the nature reserve; the two-hour quad desert adventure from the same kind of route costs €90. Both hold 4.9 stars, so this is not a quality gap.

Whether you are driving or sitting. A four-seater carrying a family shares one vehicle cost between four people. A single-seat quad does not.

Duration, which is elastic. The most-reviewed off-road trip on the island, a 4x4 off-road buggy tour with a local guide from €53 with 643 reviews, is listed at anything from two to seven and a half hours depending on which version you book. The short one is a loop; the long one crosses the island.

The entrance fees. This is the one people miss. That same €53 buggy tour includes admission to Shark Bay, to the Pedra de Lume salt mines and to Buracona. Those are three separate gates that you would otherwise pay at yourself, in cash, and it changes the comparison with a cheaper tour that drops you outside them. Its full route takes in the Santa Maria salt pans, Praia do Kite, Serra Negra, Shark Bay, Pedra de Lume, Terra Boa, Buracona and the village of Palmeira – which is the standard island circuit, driven yourself instead of from a minibus seat.

Cheaper again is the 4x4 off-road quad tour with a local guide, two hours from €44 with 240 reviews.

Who gets turned away

Read this before you book for a group, because the restrictions are real and they are applied at the meeting point rather than at the checkout.

For the guided buggy tour, the operator lists it as not suitable for children under four, for pregnant women, or for anyone with back problems. You need to bring a driving licence if you intend to take the wheel, along with closed shoes and clothes you do not mind losing to dust.

That back-problems clause is not boilerplate. Sal’s interior tracks are corrugated volcanic stone, and a buggy has no suspension travel to speak of. Two hours of it is genuinely jarring, and people with a bad back regret it about twenty minutes in.

If there are small children in the party, there is a middle path: four-seater buggies marketed for families and guided off-road tours in an open vehicle where somebody else drives. Slower, less dusty, and nobody needs a licence.

Dust is the other thing nobody mentions in advance. The guided buggy tour hands out a helmet with a visor and a shemagh – a wrap for your face and neck – and both are there for a reason. Contact lenses and open shoes are a poor combination with this island.

The zipline is the odd one out, and the only one without a vehicle

The zipline above Santa Maria costs €55 for two hours and has 539 reviews. The operator advertises a 1,000-metre line, and the trip starts with a walk up at Serra Negra – the hill you will already have driven past on any island tour – before you come back down it on a steel cable with the Atlantic in front of you.

Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, transport, the guide, the safety equipment and briefing, and drinks afterwards. Bring closed-toe shoes and something to tie your hair back; a loose strap of hair in a pulley is the reason that instruction exists.

Two limits: people over 130 kg cannot ride, and unaccompanied minors are not accepted. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead, which is more generous than the weather on this island usually requires.

Picking one

You want to drive and you want the island. The €53 guided buggy tour, long version, with the three admissions in it. It is the best value on this list and the numbers say so.

You want the ride, not the sightseeing. The desert quad or buggy, two hours, south of Santa Maria. You pay more per hour for less ground covered, and that is the correct trade if the driving is the point.

You are travelling with children under four, or with a bad back. The open-vehicle tour, or skip the off-road category entirely – there are 38 other things to do on the island from €25.

You have two hours and want the memory. The zipline. It is the highest-reviewed adrenaline activity on Sal that does not involve a steering wheel, and it is over before the dust settles.
